Recent research into the positive benefits of touch have shed light on the advantages of massage: we all know that a good massage will relax our muscles, but it seems the benefits go much further. For example, a U.S. study sponsored by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, saw 29 healthy adults being randomly assigned a 45-minute deep-tissue massage, while another group were given a light massage. Those that got the deep tissue massage had a significant decrease in their levels of cortisol, which is often called the ‘stress hormone’ due to its connection to the stress response.
