It started in the maritime world, where they use an “old fashioned and costly process of producing prototypes of ships”, CEO Gerbert Smits explains. He started the company two years ago, with CCO Linda van Hal and CTO Joep Grapperhaus. “Before manufacturing the actual ship, there’s a prototype made out of different kinds of material, like large plates of wood. It takes a lot of manpower and time. After the prototype is approved, it usually gets destroyed – such a waste.” “We can do this differently,” Smits and his companions thought. “Printing smaller things was already quite common. Why can’t we print something bigger?” That is how 10XL began.
